Writing – Selective High School Test
Complete guide to the writing section, common task types, improvement tips, and HeyLearno practice support.
About NSW Selective Writing Test
The Writing section of the Selective High School Placement Test invites students to demonstrate their ability to generate ideas thoughtfully and communicate them effectively in a specific form and for an audience. The task is open-response: you receive a writing prompt or stimulus (which may be a picture, heading, short passage or situation) and you must respond within the time limit. Key to success are three equally important dimensions: content and creativity, structure and organisation, and language control. The task is completed in 30 minutes.

How to improve — practical strategies
1. Stimulus-based writing drills
Use prompts and write 250–300 words in 20–25 minutes. Review for form, audience, and one grammar/spelling error.
2. Genre rotation & audience focus
Rotate genres weekly and adjust tone. Practice formal and informal writing for different audiences.
3. Structured paragraph practice
Practice topic sentence, supporting sentences, and conclusion. Combine four paragraphs cohesively and time yourself.
4. Vocabulary, grammar & sentence variety
Create weekly lists of new words and incorporate them into sentences. Re-write one paragraph daily to improve grammar.
5. Self-review & peer review
Read your work aloud, fix awkward phrasing, one grammar mistake, one punctuation issue. Exchange with peers for feedback.
6. Use HeyLearno’s writing feedback and timed tasks
Attempt timed tasks, get instant teacher feedback or written diagnostics, and track your improvement over time.
Common mistakes & quick fixes
- Ignoring the prompt or writing off-topic: Underline the task word before starting to stay on topic.
- Lack of paragraphs or weak structure: Pre-write headings: Introduction, Body, Conclusion to organize ideas.
- Using simple, repetitive sentences: Alternate sentence starters like "However", "Meanwhile", "In contrast" to vary sentences.
- Spelling or punctuation slipping due to pace: Reserve the last 3 minutes to proof-read at least 5 lines.
